Technology had several breakthroughs this year. Most gadgets are poorly designed and almost useless but often over-valued. However, there are those that shine like stars in a dark night. These may be good gift material though they may be too expensive.
Best Gadgets in 2008 are:
Hybrid Electric Bikes. An electric motor is attached to a bike that gives ease to pedaling. It is powered by rechargeable batteries that can last at 70 miles. Two-wheel commuting is not as sweaty as before with this hybrid electric bike.
Geotagging Devices. Mapping your travels through your digital camera is made easy through the Eye-Fi Explore, which adds 2 GB of memory and also links your camera to a Wi-Fi access point. The Explore “geotags” every photo with data of location. However, this gadget depends largely on a database of Wi-Fi- access points, which is limited to metro areas only. Another geotagging gadget, ATP Photo Finder, gives a more accurate and a wider area of GPS receiver.
Superthin OLED TV. This television screen is about 1/8-inch thick only. It is startlingly thin but seemed better than an LCD or plasma screen. It is only 11 inches wide and made with organic diodes that emit lighting.
Extra Fast Cameras. CasioExilim EX-F1 can shoot 60 frames per second (high definition stills), and 1,200 frames per second (standard definition video). The EX-FH20 slows the speed down to 40 frames (stills) and 1,000 frames (video) per second. Samsung HMX20C, which is a video camera, performs well at 300 frames per second.
Tag Reader for Kids. Leapfrog’s Tag Reading System is a pen-like stylus that reads aloud in characters voices as it slides across specially-made books. The book emits sound effects and dialogue, which are embedded in illustrations. There are also word games that will keep kids entertained a little longer. The pen can hold audio from up to 5 books.
